''The Sweet Escape'' is the second studio album by American recording artist Gwen Stefani, released in the United States on December 5, 2006 by Interscope Records. Having originally intended to return to No Doubt after her 2004 solo album ''Love. Angel. Music. Baby.'', Stefani decided to record a second album as a way to release some of the material left over from the ''L.A.M.B.'' writing sessions. The album musically resembles its predecessor while exploring more modern pop sounds. It was released to generally mixed reviews from contemporary music critics, receiving criticism for its strong similarities to ''L.A.M.B.''
It was preceded by the lead single "Wind It Up", which charted moderately across the world, and produced the follow-up single "The Sweet Escape", which proved more successful worldwide. We were all, suffice it to say, way off thinking that Britney Spears would be the next Madonna. Who would have guessed that some pouty Orange County ska chick would grab those untended reins and blossom into a trendsetting crossover icon? Now on (understandably) extended sabbatical from her day job in no doubt, Gwen keeps rolling sevens with her eclectic, uber-hip stable of producers and co-writers. For god's sake, Pharrell's got her yodeling in first single "Wind It Up." No pop star has yodeled since Jewel, and even Ms. Precocious didn't break that nonsense out on an actual single. Yet, "Wind"'s Sound of Music sample plays like a sequel to "Rich Girl" (and thumbed nose to Fergie) and the whole shebang should be "SexyBack" ubiquitous by the time you read this. The rush-release of Escape is somewhat of a shock given all the hoopla about Gwennie's progeny, but the girl's work ethic clearly hasn't suffered. For the zillionth time, hope Axl's taking notes.
